The Christian, living in an environment increasingly alien and unsympathetic to righteous living, should behave in such a way as to reflect credit on the Heavenly Father, not abusing or misusing our minds and bodies and energies in ungodly and damaging pursuits.
The basis of such an appeal is not simply raw compulsion you must, you owe but rather on the grounds of our goodwill contract with God through Christ, one grounded in reciprocal love and affection. ‘We love because he first loved us’ (1 John 4: 19, NIV-UK).
Such reciprocity goes far beyond duty. It stems from the appreciation, gratitude and devotion which the ransomed soul feels toward the Saviour, by whose sacrifice we have been cleansed of sin.
It lies at the root of unselfish agape love that form of love which
adheres to righteousness simply because it is good. It is this love which
the world in general fails to appreciate, not being spiritually
minded.
