EVOLUTION AND HUMILITY
It’s a peculiar thing, this widespread self-deprecation of the human being.
Darwinian evolutionists are fond of undermining our species to which, obviously, they too belong by emphasising its connections to ‘other animals’, asserting that we’re basically just a more highly developed version, our principal position in the scheme of things the result of cosmic chance.
In the more religious world of the past, ‘natural’ theology tended to extol the virtues of Man (as in the likeness of God) and trumpeted his physical and moral superiority to the creatures below him. Neither view correctly states the whole truth.
Looking on this from the charitable side, perhaps the evolutionist is displaying a sort of humility in denigrating his own existence, his virtue resting on his unwillingness to make extravagant claims.
The Christian is frequently criticised by the unbeliever for asserting that Man is a ‘special’ creation, as though a belief in the Bible account is not only a sign of stupidity, but narcissistic too.
Thus we are presented with the novel picture of the Darwinianist laying claim to the higher ground of a more sober and honest evaluation of Man on the one hand and, on the other, the Christian who generally regards himself as a sinner, unworthy of life vilified as wilfully deceived and arrogant. – AP
