Evolution and a Preoccupation With God

There is an obsession with God.

It’s not really new.

It just seems more pronounced in our interconnected world.

Hardly a day passes without some argument for or against the idea appearing in the popular literature.

Those courageous enough to speak up in favour of the notion are invariably shot down by angry sceptics, for whom the very idea of belief in a Supreme Being as Director of Life is preposterous the mark of a dimwit. Evolution, you ninny that’s where it’s at.

But if humanity is truly the product of a practical, no-nonsense-get-on-with-it process of piecemeal assembly, just why did this persisting, widespread and multi-layered belief in a Creator come to be?

What evolutionary advantage would such a notion have offered to the emerging species?

Perhaps one eccentric individual invented it, palming it off on millions of gullible, unformed minds who had nothing better to think about. If so, this must have been the most successful misinformation campaign in history. (AP)
